Every pregnancy gear list on the internet has 80 items on it. You need about 15 of them in the first week. Here’s the honest breakdown.
For the hospital bag itself
Pack this by week 34-35, not the week you’re due — babies don’t read due dates.
•
Going-home outfit for baby, sized newborn and 0-3 months (newborns are unpredictably sized).
•
Nursing/pumping bra even if you’re planning to formula-feed — you’ll still need support.
•
Phone charger with a long cord. You will not remember this until you need it.
•
Your own pillow. Hospital pillows are famously terrible.
This is where most checklists overload you. The actual short list:
•
A safe place for baby to sleep — a bassinet like the Snoo if it’s in budget, or any firm, flat, empty sleep surface if not.
•
A sound machine — the newborn stretch is loud (crying, house noise, older siblings) and white noise genuinely helps everyone sleep, parents included.
•
Bottles, even if you’re breastfeeding — for pumped milk, for a partner’s turn, for the nights you need backup.
•
A nursing pillow if you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding — your arms will thank you by day 3.
What you can actually skip at first
Wipes warmers, shoes, most “newborn entertainment” toys, and anything described as an “outfit for every occasion.” Newborns sleep 16+ hours a day. They will not judge your gear choices.
Build your own list instead of guessing
The fastest way to avoid both over-buying and under-buying is a real registry, not a generic checklist — MamaBestie’s shareable registry lets you build exactly the list above (and only that list), then send one link to family so nobody duplicates gifts. See how registry sharing works if you haven’t set yours up yet.
