In this lesson
Part 1
Plan around the visit
Ask whether baby will nap, eat or travel in your car. Borrowing or bringing suitable equipment may be more sensible than buying everything twice. Confirm the exact products with the parents.
Part 2
Look from a child’s level
Check access to medicines, cleaning products, cords, small objects and older children’s toys. Secure hazards before the visit. Keep button batteries and loose magnets inaccessible.
Check recalled equipment and assembly instructions. An older crib or car seat is not automatically suitable just because it looks fine. Agree on a safe sleep space before an overnight visit.
Part 3
Make the arrival easy
Set aside a place for the diaper bag and show the parents where supplies are. Keep pets and visiting children supervised according to the family’s plan. Let the parent explain any new routine at each visit.
One thing to try today
Walk through one room and make a list of changes before the next visit.
For a partner, grandparent or helper
Ask what the family will bring before buying duplicate gear.
