Part 1
Start with the first ordinary day
Picture coming home: where will baby sleep, where are feeding supplies, and who will bring food for you? Use those moments to guide your list. A beautiful nursery can wait for the essentials of daily care.
Walk through your space with another caregiver. Make frequently used supplies easy to reach, and decide who will take responsibility for restocking them.
Part 2
Make a small support plan
Choose a person for meals, another for an errand, and a backup for transport or sibling care. Ask for a specific task and time instead of hoping someone notices.
Keep care-team contact details and your appointment questions together. Ask your own clinicians what to prepare for your birth and recovery; another familyโs shopping list may not fit your needs.
Part 3
Buy in stages
Start with a modest supply of clothes and consumables. Check what you already own, what your care team provides, and what you can safely borrow. Keep receipts and product instructions.
One thing to try today
Choose three jobs to finish before baby arrives and assign one owner to each.
For a partner, grandparent or helper
Offer a concrete errand or meal delivery with a time the family can accept.
Make a caregiver handoff sheet โSources & further reading
